Laser Vision Correction
Background
Laser Assisted in-Situ keramileusis (Lasik) combines the precision of the excimer laser with the benefits of automated lamellar keratoplasty (ALK). Using a microkeratome a precise layer of corneal tissue is isolated from the remainder of the cornea. This flap of tissue is retracted from the underlying corneal bed as it is attached or "hinged" to the cornea. Then, in less than 60 seconds, light pulses from the excimer laser reshapes the corneal bed with
an accuracy up to 0.25 microns. The corneal flap is then placed in its normal position and healing is rapid. Stitches are not required for a normal lasik procedure. The procedure may be used effectively for nearsightedness, astigmatism and farsightedness. Most patients return to normal activity within one or two days.
Your Success is in the Details
The outcome of your surgery is highly dependent on obtaining the most precise pre-operative readings possible. We pride ourselves in having the most sophisticated instruments available. Our Zeiss Optical Coherence Laser Biometer was one of the first to be installed in California and the first instrument of its kind in Santa Monica. Our office has specialized instruments for measuring corneal thickness (pachymetry), the shape of your cornea (topography) and precise refraction (refractor). Our detailed methods, careful analysis, and highly skilled surgical abilities enable us to obtain the best possible visual results.
